☕️ The Critical Distinction: Sync Is Not a Backup
Many people use OneDrive or Google Drive and think they're covered. That's not accurate:
❌ Sync
If you delete a file on your computer, it also gets deleted from the cloud. If ransomware encrypts your computer, it encrypts the cloud copy too.
✅ Real Backup
Backup keeps older "versions." Even if the original file was deleted or infected, you can always roll back to an earlier version.
The Trusted 3-2-1 Backup Rule:
3 copies of your important data.
2 different media types (an external hard drive + cloud).
1 copy kept offsite (a remote cloud).
🛠️ Recommendations for Immediate Setup
Automatic photo backup: Make sure Google Photos or iCloud are backing up your smartphone.
An external hard drive: Connect it once a month and click "Image" (full backup) of your computer.
Protection against ransomware: Use services with "File History" going back 30 days at minimum.
💡 Remember: A backup that's only tested when you actually need to restore it is a backup you should assume won't work. Test it twice a year by actually opening a file from the backup.
