Self-Maintenance: Health Check & Recovery

A computer is like a car - it needs periodic maintenance. This guide will teach you how to check your computer's "health" and how to build yourself a safety net in case of a failure.

Recommended check: once a month

🔍 How do you check disk health (HDD/SSD)?

The hard drive is where all your data is stored. A disk failure means data loss.

  1. Click Start and type CMD, open it as "Run as Administrator".
  2. Type the following command and press Enter:
  3. chkdsk c: /f
  4. The computer will ask whether to run the check on the next startup - type Y and restart.

Why is this important? The command scans for bad sectors and fixes file system errors before they turn into a full crash.

Recommended timing: before installing new software

🛡️ Creating a Restore Point (System Restore)

A restore point is a "time machine." If you installed software that broke your computer, you can go back in time to when everything worked.

  1. Search the taskbar for: "Create a restore point".
  2. In the window that opens, make sure protection for drive C is On.
  3. Click the Create button and give the point a name (e.g. "Before installing Office").
Importance: recovering accidentally deleted/edited files

📄 "Previous Versions" (File History)

Accidentally deleted an important paragraph in a Word document and saved it? You can go back.

  1. Right-click a folder or file.
  2. Select Restore previous versions.
  3. If the feature is enabled, you'll see a list of dates for previous versions of the file.

How do you make sure it's working? Look in File History settings and connect an external drive or network server for ongoing file backup.

🚨 When should you call Ornet IT?

Self-checks are great, but if the computer freezes during the disk check (chkdsk), or if you get a message like S.M.A.R.T Errorstop immediately!

Continuing to work on a damaged disk can make things worse. Contact us right away so we can "clone" your data before the disk dies for good.
